The effects of the covid-19 pandemic on trafficking in persons

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY - Traffickers adapted to the ‘new normal’ -- Capitalizing on people’s loss of livelihoods during the pandemic and the increasing amount of time both adults and children were spending on the Internet, traffickers utilized social media and other online platforms to recruit new victims.

Traffickers have responded to the closure of bars, clubs and massage parlors (due to lockdowns, curfews and other measures to control the spread of COVID-19) by moving the sexual exploitation of adults and children to private homes and apartments.

Human Trafficking & Modern-day Slavery

A country-by-country compilation of links to published articles concerning actual instances of human trafficking and modern-day slavery.  A student writing a term paper related to HT could use a search engine to compile a similar list by himself - but to do that, he would have to work his way through tens of thousands of links that are not helpful.

Poverty & Hunger

Poverty can be a precursor of Human Trafficking.  It can drive people to trust and to take chances that may lead to unfortunate circumstances that will have tragic impact on their personal well-being and on the lives of their families.  Learning about poverty provides background to the victimization of trafficking.

HumanTrafficking.org  was a web resource for combating human trafficking. The project was implemented by the Academy for Educational Development with funding provided by the U.S. State Department. Its objective is to bring Government and NGOs in the East Asia and Pacific together to cooperate and learn from each other’s experiences in their efforts to combat human trafficking.  It is not currently accessible.
